1870 to 1922 Some of these obituaries have been copied verbatim from the local Delta newspaper, The Delta News and The Delta Times, for the period 1902 to 1914. Previously news from this area had been reported in newspapers in Vancouver and New Westminster, and the items included here are taken from those newspapers. The same situation prevailed for the period of the First World War and the years immediately prior to the arrival of another local newspaper in Delta. Vancouver and New Westminster served the area until the Weekly Optimist began in 1922. Use of [sic] can be found throughout the database. Typically it indicates that there is incorrect information or incorrect spelling in the language immediately previous. It was the compilers decision to not include corrected information in the belief that more information, which could not be substantiated in this particular format, would only add to confusion. Cross-referencing to other sources, such as Vital Statistics in Victoria, British Columbia, or the cemetery at Boundary Bay, Delta, was included where it added to the information. For example, it was done most often with married womens names, and, to a lesser extent, with the names of infants or very young children. A further listing of names of deceased was added to the end of the obituaries. This is a list of names of individuals found in Vital Statistics records, for whom no newspaper obituary has been located to date. The newspapers used as sources can be found in various holdings. The local Delta newspapers are available on microfilm at the Delta Museum and Archives, and at the Provincial Archives in Victoria. The Vancouver and New Westminster newspapers are found in several libraries, including the library of the University of British Columbia. |
