GREETINGS!

A Merry Christmas Now That the War Has Ended

“REAL MERRY CHRISTMAS IS BRITAIN’S AIM

Will Ignore News and Forget Strife in Best Yuletide Since War ...

LONDON, Dec. 24 -- The peace that mankind knew in the quiet, contented years before the war came back to Britain tonight to make a merry Christmas for the subjects of King George.

What the faraway peoples are doing or not doing -- these things matter not to the average Englishman from teatime this evening until the country starts slowly back to work Thursday morning. From now until then news is nothing and happiness and home is everything to those who inhabit this mystic, chilly chip of the old block of Europe.

For the next two days Britons will live by turkeys, not theatres or treaties; plum pudding and pork will soothe the tongue that only a few days ago talked about protection; many a wassail bowl and loving cup will be lifted and many a mug of ale drawn down ...”

A Website to Check Regularly

A new discovery for me is the work that the Nanaimo Family History Society is doing in transcribing the Canadian passenger lists for arrivals at Halifax, Nova Scotia and Quebec City, Quebec from 1900 to 1921.

Volunteers have been working on indexing Quebec arrivals (including Montreal) from 1908 to 1910, and to date have completed the period 02 July 1908 to 13 October 1910.

Check out the website at http://members.shaw.ca/nanaimo.fhs/.

What I found really interesting, and which is not recorded on the transcriptions the Society has created, is a column in the original document entitled “Destination.” Some of those destinations listed on the website sample are “P Albert Sask,” “Claresholm Alta” and Brantfd Ont.”

Western Canadian Directories on the Internet

You’ll find a number of databases of directories, including some for British Columbia towns and cities, and some that are searchable, on this website http://www.daveobee.com/resources/directories.html

I can tell that I haven’t been spending enough time on the Internet recently.
