SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!

Weddings and their Aftermath

Untitled,

“ Prospective brides and grooms will welcome the announcement that the traditional shower of rice is no longer considered good form by fashionable folk. Rose leaves are used instead. If any color scheme is carried out in the decorations of the wedding, the same color is used in the shower of leaves.

Just as the bride and groom leave the house, a tiny basket filled with fresh leaves is handed to each member of the immediate bridal party, who throw them over the happy couple.

Whether the ‘luck’ will be the same, has not yet been determined, but the wedding journey will be more comfortable than when spent in dislodging hard grains of rice from collar, gown and hair.”

Identity Theft

This is not a history item per se, but since many of us spend an inordinate amount of time on the Internet, I thought it might have benefits for us.

Children Evacuated to Canada during World War Two

“CHILD REFUGEES TO BE BROUGHT IN THOUSANDS

Only Limitation to Be Canadian Capacity and Organizing Transport

RESULT OF PARLEY

Ottawa, June 5 (Staff) -- Thousands of child refugees from Britain, France and Allied countries will be brought to Canada just as soon as transportation can be arranged, the Government announced today following a conference of immigration, health, welfare and Provincial authorities.

The movement to Canada will be limited only by the Canadian ability to absorb the refugees, the British restrictions regarding classes living in the United Kingdom and the matter of providing transportation, it was stated.

The greatest need at the moment is in France, but German capture of the Channel ports has made it difficult to get the refugees out.

It was announced by Hon. T. A. Crerar that Canada had offered the fullest co-operation in taking care of refugees the moment that the invasion of Holland and Belgium started.

Canada’s geographical proximity to the British Isles means that the refugee movement will be almost exclusively to this Dominion. At the moment transportation difficulties make it virtually impossible to move the homeless to Australia and New Zealand.

Asked to Open Houses

An appeal will be made shortly to the Canadian people to open their homes to the child refugees so that they can be given the best of care in the Dominion. The whole force of welfare organizations will be mobilized to look after them.

To cut through hampering rules, the children and any other refugees who may come will be admitted to Canada as non-immigrants. After the war they will be able, if they so desire, to remain in Canada or return to their own countries with no more formality than if they had been in Canada for a long visit.

British regulations now prevent any person between the age of 16 and 60 leaving the country without an exit permit. This regulation will virtually limit the movement to Canada to children. Canada has set no limit to the invitation that has been extended. Numbers will be governed by need, officials stated...”
